The World of Rescue

This wasn’t written by me and unfortunately I don’t know the author, but I think it sums up perfectly, both the joys and heartaches of rescue….

“For animal lovers like me, animal rescue is the most incredible, rewarding job… in the history of ever.

At the same time… it’s also the most heartbreaking…
The truth is…
You see a lot of things… you never thought you’d see.
You witness a level of cruelty… you didn’t think was possible.
You feel a degree of helplessness… you never thought you’d know.

You stare at painful images… soon burned into your memory… that will haunt your thoughts forever.
You try to pick up the pieces… so many pieces… of the damage you didn’t do.
You do everything in your power… but even still… you’ll never reach them all.

You’ll try to stay strong… but you’ll mostly feel weak.
You’ll build walls to protect your heart… but they’ll never keep you safe.
You’ll place barriers around your soul… but the pain will always reach you.

And no matter how hard you try to fight it… over time… here’s the truth about what happens in animal rescue…
The neglect changes you.
The abuse hardens you.
The suffering breaks you.

The ignorance angers you.
The indifference disturbs you.
The injustice destroys you.

On a daily basis… your faith will be tested.
Your heart will be wounded.
Your soul will be altered.

On a weekly basis… you’ll question yourself.
You’ll question your strength.
You’ll question the world.On a monthly basis… you’ll fall down.
You’ll get up.
You’ll go on…

On a yearly basis… you’ll look back…
You’ll see faces…
You couldn’t save them.

You’ll learn to mourn.
To grieve.
To sob.

You’ll learn to trust a little less.
To do a little more.
To fight a little harder.

You’ll learn to try.
To hope.
To pray.

You’ll learn to fail.
To succeed.
To accept.

You’ll learn when to hold on.
When to give up.
When to let go.

You’ll learn who you are.
What you stand for.
Why that matters.

Then… at times… you’ll forget why you matter.
You’ll question what you’re doing.
You’ll wonder if it’s worth it.

But… here’s the good news…

When you forget…
When you question…
When you wonder…

All you have to do…
Is take a look around…
And you’ll see them.
You’ll see their faces.
You’ll see their smiles.
You’ll feel their love.

In their eyes, you’ll see their journeys…
You’ll remember their beginnings…
You’ll know how far they’ve come…

You’ll remember when they didn’t know you…
When they didn’t trust you…
When they’d given up.

You’ll remember how you healed them…
How you loved them…
How they loved you, too.

And as you look back…
You’ll want to move forward…
For them… and because of them.

In your darkest hours, you’ll look around…
To find the differences made… the hope given… and the lives saved…
Because you existed.

In those moments, when you look into their eyes… every doubt will be erased.
Every question will be answered.
Every worry will subside.

Because in that instant… in each of your hearts…
You both share the very same thought:
“Every bit of pain was worth it… for this moment here with you.”
And honestly… no matter what else happens…
Those moments hold all the strength you need…
To keep going.

Rescue is pain.
Rescue is joy.
Rescue is worth it… because they are worth it.

And that’s the honest truth.”

Casper’s story of survival … and how you can help!

15-009 Casper June2015 (2)

The day he arrived – before being vetted and neutered

Casper had been spotted looking for food in a yard, at the start of the winter (January 2015). And then he disappeared just before Nova Scotia’s record breaking amounts of snowfall. On some days there was so much snow that cars were buried and snow was up over doors and windows. Sadly, it was feared that Casper did not survive. But then a miracle happened … and he was spotted again! Somehow he had made it through the winter. His coat was ragged, he was thin and his pitiful cries for food were heartbreaking. Tapa was contacted to ask if there was anything we could do for this boy. Casper was trapped and we transferred him to a nice soft bed in a large dog kennel. Rather than the “wild” response we expected from him, we were so excited when we could actually pet and brush him. The next step was to have him vetted and neutered … and that is where Casper’s next hurdle was discovered … his test for FIV was positive. It is not what we had hoped for, however we are optimistic for his future after reading various current reports on FIV research.

You can see the difference in him already in the middle picture!  He is becoming a bit more brave every day and actually moved from the smaller kennel to the larger one, all by himself:)

Stay tuned for more updates on Casper’s progress.

UPDATE:  THANKS to his rescuer, Darlene M., Casper is now one of our permanent sponsored rescues!

March 2015: Vinny and Precious have been ADOPTED!

Meet Vinny and Precious!

These beautiful kittens were born outside and rescued at approximately 8 weeks of age!!  They are now approximately 12 weeks old and are quickly coming out of their shell and love to be petted and handled.  They will soon be ready for adoption and would do best in a quiet home that has a separate area to keep them in for a short time until they are adjusted to their new home.  For more information or for an adoption application, please contact us via email:  tapacatrescue@outlook.com  We are located near Halifax, NS.

Timmy’s $10 to $1,000 Challenge Continues!

Timmy March-2012 006

TAPA Cat Rescue Announces

Timmy’s $10 to $1,000

 Fundraising Challenge!

Do you know 10 people??  Would you be willing to help us with our $10 to $1,000 Fundraising Challenge??  It’s quick and easy and can be done from your computer!!!  Here’s how it works …

We are asking 10 people to contact at least 10 people to ask them to donate $10 or more.  With your support we could raise $1,000 or more to help rescued cats and ittens!

Now in our 7th year, Tapa Cat Rescue has helped more than 700 kittens and cats previously living on the streets in HRM.  This year has been our busiest by far, which means more vet bills and more food bills.  We rely on fundraising to help kittens like Timmy – discarded in a park and diagnosed with spina bifida … or cats like Sophia, our senior rescue who was living on someone’s doorstep… she would not have survived the winter.

Can you help us reach our goal of raising $1,000 or more?  Please ask at least 10 people if they would donate $10 or more to help our rescued cats and kittens … and if those 10 people ask 10 more people … that would be fantastic!!!  Post our challenge on your Facebook page or on your bulletin board at work.  Timmy and his rescued friends will be truly grateful!

Donations can be made through  www.CanadaHelps.org

By email:  tapacatrescue@outlook.com

By mail:  PO Box 212 Stn Central, Halifax NS B3J 2M4

~ Official income tax receipts will be issued for donations of $10 or more ~

We would love to help them all if we could…

We are happy to help when we have funds and space to do so. However, despite having helped more than 700 strays in feral cats in the past 7 years, we are one of the many cat rescues in HRM that receives ZERO funding. HRM places no importance on the work that we do, nor does it seem that they care about the many cats who were suffering outside… and the many that are sadly still needing help.

Sadly, as much as we would love to, we simply do not have the funds to help every stray and feral. Tapa Cat Rescue relies on donations and our own fundraising in order to care for our rescues waiting for adoption, and to help others on our waiting list.

For people who find friendly strays, we do recommend that 1) they take a photo of the cat and post a “Found Ad” on Kijiji and also post the photo and information on the Facebook page “Lost and Found Cats in HRM and Nova Scotia”, and 2) if no owner is found, call the SPC and put your name on their waiting list to take the cat.  By all means, feel free to check with us as well to see if we have room and/or funds to help!

I would also encourage every person who has stray or feral cats in their yard or their neighbourhood, to send an email to your local councillor, to find out what HRM will do to help!!!  www.halifax.ca/councillors
Sincerely,

Tapa Cat Rescue Society
